Cancun
Cancun topside is a wonderful combination of natural beauty, theme parks, islands, ecological reserves and white sandy beaches. However, besides sun, sand and sea, this destination also offers a limitless variety of underwater activities to choose from: the diving, snorkeling and fishing here just can’t be beat. Beneath the tranquil Mexican Caribbean Sea is a world teeming with tropical fish that live on the second largest barrier reef in the world. Mujeres Bay and the Caribbean Sea are perfect for a fun…and safe…day in the sun enjoying these and many other activities.
For land sports lovers, there are world-renowned signature golf courses, ATV or horseback tours through the jungle or along the beach, and speed boating or jet skiing through the wonderful mangroves of Nichupté Lagoon.
And if you’re an adventure tourism and extreme sports fan, look no further: Cancun is the jump off point for a huge variety of tours that take you to exciting, hidden oases to explore huge caves, hike or bike along nearly invisible jungle trails, zip-line over the treetops or rappel down into a lost “cenote”.
In the afternoon and evening, stroll through Cancun’s great malls or dine at one of its prestigious restaurants, relax until the wee hours of the morning in one of its fantastic bars or dance the night away at a world-famous discotheque .
Riviera Maya
Located outside of Cancun along an extensive strip of beach running from Puerto Morelos to Tulum, the Riviera Maya is an impressive combination of enormous hotel resorts, modern marinas, costal ports, theme parks, archeological sites and the natural beauty of virgin beaches and tropical jungle.
The heart of this huge tourism corridor is Playa del Carmen, an old fishing village that now competes with Cancun as an international destination. It attracts millions of tourists every year, who can be seen strolling down its famous 5th Avenue promenade filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and sidewalk cafés.
There are an infinite variety of activities available in the Riviera Maya. Diving, snorkeling and sport fishing are the main water activities, but you can also go horseback riding along the beach or a jungle trail, exploring on an ATV and, of course, play a round golf on any of the area’s many courses.
There are different tours available every day to visit the remains of ancient Mayan ceremonial centers that cover the Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá are the best known but you shouldn’t miss some of the other fascinating sight, like a magical tour through Aktun Chen caverns. Sports enthusiasts might choose one of the many eco-tourism activities, such as bicycling or hiking through the tropical forest or kayaking through mangroves, or something a little more adventuresome, like zip lining through the treetops or rappelling down into a deep natural well.
If you would prefer a more relaxing day, try one of the region’s ecological parks: Xcaret and Xel-Ha will amaze you. They attract thousands of visitors a year who want to rediscover nature, visit animals in their natural habitat and learn more about the peninsula’s plant life. The parks’ wonderful facilities are built to harmonize with nature and to insure their visitors have a fantastic time. |
